Bloody New Year in Detroit: 6 shot, 3 killed

Detroit – Less than ten hours into the new year, six people had been shot in Detroit, three fatally.

A 27-year-old woman was arrested in connection with Detroit’s first murder in 2021, a fatal shooting at 1:15 a.m. on the 18000 block of Griggs on the west side of the city, according to police.

“The 31-year-old male victim was shot dead during an altercation with the 27-year-old female suspect,” police said in a release. “Medics responded to the location and pronounced the victim dead.”

About five minutes later, two men, ages 26 and 31, and a 27-year-old woman were leaving a meeting at Block 18800 of McNichols when “someone started shooting and they were beaten,” police said.

The woman died while the two men were in stable condition.

“The suspect is currently unknown,” said police. “The circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation.”

A fight resulted in a non-fatal shooting at 1:40 am on the 15,300 block of Coyle on the west side of Detroit, police said.

“The 31-year-old male victim heard a knock on the front door and when it opened a male suspect shot and beat him,” police said. “Before this incident, the victim was involved in an altercation with the suspect.”

The shooter, described as an African American, 5 feet 8 to 6 feet with dreadlocks, drove off in an older model’s dark Chevy Trailblazer, police said.

In the third murder on Friday at around 9:20 am, an unidentified male victim was found in the grass on the 19500 block of Troester on the east side of Detroit. He was gunshot on his body, police said.

Although the Detroit Police Department is not expected to release final 2020 crime data until next week, the number of murders was expected to have increased by about 20% from the 273 murders recorded in 2019.
