Body Cam Footage Released in Hillsborough Deputy-Involved Shooting Near Circle K

Body camera footage from a deputy-involved shooting in Hillsborough County was released yesterday, revealing the intense standoff that led to the death of an unidentified man. The incident occurred on the evening of November 16, around 9:15 p.m., near a Circle K gas station at West Hillsborough Avenue and Elliot Drive, as reported byWFLA.

According to the released footage, 26-year-old Hillsborough Deputy Jared Mincemeyer initiated the fateful traffic stop after observing an obscured tag on the man’s vehicle. During the stop, captured on video from both Mincemeyer’s and an accompanying undercover deputy’s body cameras, the situation quickly escalated. Having told the man to step out, the deputies noticed the driver reaching for an object beneath his seat, which triggered Deputy Mincemeyer to open fire as the man emerged with what officials claimed was a gun, as said in reports obtained byFOX 13 News.

The man was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The identity of the man remained withheld pending notification of next of kin. In the interim, to protect the integrity of the investigation and the privacy of the individual, the sheriff’s office blurred the man’s face in the released footage. Details were limited to the confirmation of the man’s death and the involvement of Deputy Mincemeyer, as outlined byHillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Chad Chronister commented on the incident, asserting, “Our deputy was simply doing his job trying to protect our community when he was forced to defend himself against an armed individual,” in a statement that was released. “No deputy ever wants to face this situation, but when confronted with a deadly threat, they must act to protect themselves and others,” Chronister further stated, his words documented byWFLA. Deputy Mincemeyer, with the department since October 2022, had not been previously involved in any use-of-force incidents.
