After more than a day, a boil water advisory that affected a number of St. Louis communities has been lifted. A water main break near Branch Street under Interstate 70 prompted the caution. As to the FOX 2 Now report, the City of St. Louis Water Division claims that latest testing reveal no indications of contamination, guaranteeing the safety of the water supply.
Neighborhoods including Jeff-Vander-Lou, Carr Square, St. Louis Place, Benton Park, Marine Villa, and Soulard were impacted by the precautionary advice. Residents were told not to use ice from ice makers and to boil water for three minutes.Spectrum Local News stated that because the advice has been withdrawn, these actions are no longer required.
The I-70 exit onto Branch Street had to be closed due to low pressure caused by the water main break that occurred Tuesday evening. Speaking on behalf of Mayor Tishaura Jones’ office, Conner Kerrigan described it as complex and emphasized the city’s deteriorating water infrastructure. “These upgrades need to be happening, and that’s why we’re doing the work to find funding, get the people out here and make fixes,” Kerrigan said, as reported by First Alert 4.
Despite losing a day, businesses in the Soulard area adjusted to the boil water alert. According to Jon Vieluf, a co-owner of Big Daddy, he used the ice that was already there and purchased canned soda and bottled water to keep the business operating. The potential use of Rams settlement monies is one of the financial options being discussed by city officials for St. Louis’ aging water infrastructure.
