Boulder Maintains Perfect Score in LGBTQ+ Inclusion for Fifth Straight Year

According to the City of Boulder, Boulder, which is well-known for its beautiful scenery and progressive culture, has once again received praise for its outstanding support of the LGBTQ+ community, earning a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI) for the fifth consecutive year. Boulder routinely ranks first out of hundreds of cities assessed nationwide in the MEI, an annual assessment of how inclusive municipalities are. It considers nondiscrimination laws, municipal services, law enforcement, and the representation of LGBTQ+ people in leadership roles.

In addition to expressing pride in Boulder’s accomplishments, Assistant City Manager and LGBTQ+ Liaison Pam Davis acknowledged that the city is still committed to expanding its inclusive policies, saying, “We are honored to be recognized by the Human Rights Campaign for our commitment to creating an inclusive Boulder.” In addition to acknowledging the challenges the community as a whole faces, this accomplishment is the result of years of work by the city and community partners to provide a friendly environment for all LGBTQ+ residents. But given the recent struggles the LGBTQ+ community has suffered around the country, we are still dedicated to stepping up our efforts. According to the City of Boulder, Davis stated, “There is always more to be done to ensure that our city remains a place of safety, belonging, and equity for everyone.” The honor is regarded as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality, which Boulder seems prepared to take on head-on, as well as a tribute to the city’s prior achievements.

A number of policies and practices that support accessibility and non-discrimination, such as equal employment opportunities, acknowledging the rights of all gender identities and sexual orientations, and making sure law enforcement is trained to protect the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ people, support Boulder’s unwavering stance at the forefront of LGBTQ+ rights. Boulder’s model sets the standard for municipal support of LGBTQ+ rights and welfare, and other communities wishing to improve their inclusion efforts can use it as a model by using the MEI score as an indicator.
