Brockton Man Indicted for Murder in Fatal July Stabbing at Local Park

Johnny Richmond, 37, of Brockton, has been officially charged with many offenses in connection with a stabbing that occurred at a nearby park in July and claimed the life of another man. The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office said yesterday that Richmond was indicted by a grand jury on three counts of murder, carrying a dangerous weapon, and two counts of threats to kill, according to NBC Boston.

Months after Richmond allegedly threatened several people with a knife at Finnegan Park at Crescent and Montello Streets, he was indicted. The fight intensified after Edmar Goncalves, 39, of Fall River stepped in and was fatally stabbed, according to NBC Boston. Richmond’s arraignment in Brockton Superior Court has not yet been set.

After officials reacted to emergency calls on the evening of July 20, details of the stabbing became public. According to a Boston Globe source, Goncalves was discovered at Good Samaritan Hospital with a stab wound and was later declared dead. After police spoke with witnesses at the scene of the incident, Richmond was taken into custody close to the park.

Richmond was also treated for a hand laceration after his arrest, and after entering a not guilty plea in Brockton District Court in July, no bail was issued. According to the Boston Globe, “the indictment moves the case to the Superior Court system.” According to neither story, Richmond had obtained legal counsel to speak out on his behalf regarding the accusations against him.
