Burien Sets the Stage for Future Growth with Comprehensive 2044 Plan

The City Council of Burien has set forth a new trajectory for the city’s growth over the next two decades with the passage of the Burien 2044 Comprehensive Plan on October 28. This extensive plan, which reflects two years of meticulous preparations with valuable contributions from staff, Burien Planning Commission, community groups, and local residents, is set to serve as Burien’s growth blueprint into the future.

Accompanying the comprehensive plan are key components aimed at reshaping specific areas and aspects of the city; these include the new Ambaum and Boulevard Park Community Plan, amendments to the Greater Downtown Urban Center Plan, and the innovative Transportation Master Plan. “This is an exciting moment for the City of Burien,” Community Development Director Liz Stead elaborated, “The Burien 2044 Comprehensive Plan is one where we went very strong on housing, creating a lot of change for the future of the city. In the next 20 years, we’ll look back and see that this was the one. So, I think that is pretty exciting,” as reported by the City of Burien’s official news announcement.

The Shape Your City campaign was at the heart of this planning movement, encouraging Burien’s citizens to play an active role in envisaging the long-term progression of their community. This effort spawned the amalgamation of major plan updates, spanning from the comprehensive plan to the freshly minted Transportation Master Plan, and extending to the revised Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan and a new Economic Development Action Plan.

Earlier on March 18, the 2024-2030 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan received approval from the City Council, providing a strategy to bridge the gap in facilities and programs while listing prioritized capital improvements. Then, on June 3, Burien’s Economic Development Action Plan was ratified, which, according to input from numerous local business and community stakeholders, sets forth a guided path for bolstering the city’s economic foundation over the forthcoming five to ten years. With the adoption of the Burien 2044 Comprehensive Plan and Transportation Master Plan, the city wraps a significant phase of its Shape Your City initiative.
