San Francisco, CA – A freeze warning is in effect for parts of the Bay Area from Monday evening through Tuesday morning, with temperatures expected to plunge as low as 29 degrees in some areas.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the advisory for the North Bay Interior Mountains, North Bay Valleys, Eastern Santa Clara Hills, and sections of the Central Coast, including the Salinas Valley. The warning began at 8 p.m. Monday and will remain in place until 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Risks and Recommendations
The frigid conditions pose threats to sensitive populations, crops, and outdoor plumbing. Residents are advised to take the following precautions:
- Protect Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes or allow faucets to drip slowly to prevent freezing.
- Prepare Indoors: Open sink cabinet doors to circulate warm air around plumbing.
- Protect Plants: Cover outdoor vegetation and move potted plants indoors if possible.
- Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Ensure unhoused individuals, elderly neighbors, and pets have access to warm shelter.
Authorities emphasize the importance of keeping pets indoors during these harsh conditions and recommend turning off sprinklers to avoid creating icy sidewalks.
Extended Cold Expected
The NWS warns that sub-freezing temperatures could persist into Tuesday night, with the possibility of additional advisories being issued. Residents should stay updated on local weather reports and continue taking precautions as needed.
