California Man Indicted for Attempted Murder and Kidnapping In Surprise, Arizona Family Attack

In a recent announcement by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, Garrett Scott Headrick has been indicted on multiple felony charges, including attempted murder. The full statement, dated on Tuesday, laid out the harrowing details of an attack that took place last month in Surprise, Arizona, which left a community shaken and a family traumatized, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

The indictment stems from an incident where Headrick is accused of having traveled from California to confront his ex-wife. In a violent escalade, Headrick allegedly dragged the woman by her hair back into her home while she was attempting to actually leave with her children – a scene no less horrifying for its silent witnesses. According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office official statement, he is said to have struck her, attempted to strangle her, and tried to stab her. The assault was only interrupted when police dispatched non-lethal rounds to halt the attack.

Emerging from a Grand Jury indictment last Friday, the charges laid against Headrick are severe. They include one count of attempt to commit second-degree murder, a Class Two Dangerous felony; four counts of kidnapping, another Class Two felony; three counts of aggravated assault, classified as a Class Three Dangerous felony, and one count of disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. Currently held on a $500,000 cash-only bond, Headrick remains in custody, facing the weight of the law and the expectations of a justice system to answer to the allegations, as reported by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell’s office has emphasized that these charges are serious accusations. It is our judicial system’s responsibility to ensure fairness as it is set to thoroughly test these claims, all while recognizing the presumption of innocence that cushions the defendant until – and only if – proven guilty. The circumstances have unravelled a family’s private anguish into public spectacle, and whatever the outcome, the path towards resolution promises to be strenuous for all parties involved.
