The Student Design Summit is a complementary component of the Detroit Cultural Center (CCPI) planning initiative that engages students in contemporary design practice and community engagement. Each design summit is accompanied by a student design competition to give high school and college students in the state of Michigan the opportunity to redesign spaces that require innovative design solutions. Students work together in teams, receive resources, network with professionals, and use competition to improve their skills and develop new ones. The summit also includes discussions with design professionals and guidance on master plan development.

The theme of this year’s student design competition is “Designing for the digital transformation”. Even before COVID-19, Detroit’s cultural institutions showed an appetite for the development of comprehensive digital strategies and programs in order to improve their tasks and attract new target groups with convincing content and commitment. The pandemic further forced cultural institutions to step up their online activities in order to create important connections with the audiences they serve. This crisis has made us very aware that a robust digital strategy involves much more than just adding content online. It requires a basic understanding of the relationship we want to have with our audience, the digital skills, platforms, and opportunities.

We are looking for innovative visions that will catalyze the digital transformation for the Detroit Cultural Center. Ideas should be anchored in digital inclusion and designed in such a way that they integrate our core values and beliefs while at the same time promoting the excellence and cultural vibrancy for which our cultural institutions are recognized.

A jury will select one (1) overall winner and two (2) runners-up.

  • 1st Prize: $ 2,500
  • 2nd Prize: $ 1,000
  • 3rd Prize: $ 1,000
