Car Falls Off Overpass Onto I-5 in Sacramento, Driver Hospitalized in Critical Condition

SACRAMENTO, Cali. (DDN) – A car went off an overpass and landed on Interstate 5 on Monday afternoon in the Natomas area of Sacramento, according to the Sacramento Police Department. The driver is in serious condition after the accident.

At approximately 12:52 p.m., the California Highway Patrol responded to a call on northbound I-5 close to the West El Camino Avenue offramp.

A KCRA viewer named Kyman Jeung captured the moment on his dashcam and shared the video.

“It’s been hours and I’m still on edge being so close to what it could have been,” said Jeung.

Jeung was traveling north on Interstate 5, on the way home when the accident occurred.

The dashcam footage captures Jeung driving in the middle lane when debris and another car fell onto the freeway, leaving him just seconds to respond.

“It all just happened in slow motion. I saw a car falling, and tree parts falling. It was to assess the situation and figure out the least painful way to get through it. So I still had to roll through parts of the trees and whatnot, which was there’s no way around that,” said Jeung.

After the crash was cleared Monday evening, KCRA observed debris on the overpass of El Camino Avenue and caught in the tree branches.

Sacramento Police report that the driver who went off the overpass was the sole individual taken to the hospital.

“That car really could have landed on any of us that were passing at the time. The two drivers that were on my left were so much closer. I feel like those are the two lottery winners,” said Jeung.

A camera from Caltrans captured an overturned vehicle on the left shoulder of the freeway. The driver was rescued and transported to a local hospital for care.

Police reported that West El Camino Avenue was closed between Gateway Oaks Drive and Azevedo Drive as of 1:29 p.m. It reopened at approximately 3:15 p.m.
