Car Rams Police Vehicle During Chase in South Portland, Drugs Found Hidden in Candy Wrappers (1)

SOUTH PORTLAND, Mai. (DDN) – A standard traffic stop escalated into a pursuit and drug seizure on Saturday, according to South Portland Police.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m., authorities reported an attempt to stop a speeding vehicle on Westbrook Street in South Portland. As the police activated their lights, the vehicle allegedly continued to accelerate through the Brickhill area.

Authorities report that they pursued the vehicle into Osprey Circle, where it came to a halt at a dead-end. The vehicle allegedly reversed towards the officers, seemingly attempting to evade capture.

Authorities indicated that the vehicle collided with the front bumper of the police cruiser, prompting officers to draw their weapons and instruct the two individuals inside the car to exit.

Authorities report that the two individuals hailed from Massachusetts. A 21-year-old driver, Hamza A. Mahamud, allegedly lacked a valid license, and authorities discovered significant quantities of suspected drugs concealed within candy wrappers in the vehicle.

Mahamud was arrested on the following charges:

  • -Reckless Conduct With a Dangerous Weapon
  • -Aggravated Criminal Mischief
  • -Unlawful Trafficking in Cocaine
  • -Unlawful Trafficking in Marijuana
  • -Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine
  • -Aggravated Trafficking in Heroin/Fentanyl Powder
  • -Unlawful Possession of Cocaine Base
  • -Operating Without a License
  • -Failure to Stop
  • -Driving to Endanger

Gerald A. Daughtry, 33, the passenger, was arrested and charged with the following:

  • -Carrying a Concealed Weapon
  • -Unlawful Trafficking in Cocaine
  • -Unlawful Trafficking in Marijuana
  • -Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine
  • -Aggravated Trafficking in Heroin/Fentanyl Powder
  • -Unlawful Possession of Cocaine Base

Both individuals were said to have been taken to Cumberland County Jail, with each being held on a cash bail of $30,000.

Authorities report discovering a knife, various drug paraphernalia, cash, and several mobile phones inside the vehicle.
