Car Smashes Into Cemetery Headstones After Hitting Pole in Brockton; Probe Ongoing

BROCKTON, Mass. (DDN) – Police are looking into a single-vehicle car accident that occurred Saturday morning on North Cary Street in Brockton. According to officials, the driver hopped a curb and then collided with multiple headstones at a nearby cemetery.

Brockton Police responded to a report of a four-door sedan colliding with a utility pole at 41 North Cary St. around 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, according to Brockton police spokesperson Darren Duarte.

According to Duarte, “investigators believe the vehicle was traveling southbound on North Cary Street, when it changed lanes, hopped a curb, and struck a utility pole before colliding with several headstones.”

According to Duarte, Brockton Fire used extrication gear to extract the driver and passenger from their vehicle.

“Emergency Medical Services (EMS) treated the severely injured men and transported them to a hospital,” added the officer.

Brockton Police and State Police are still investigating the crash, and the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office is the lead agency on the case, according to Duarte.

The crash occurred just days after two Brockton men, Fernando Da Silveira Jr., 20, and Christopher Ribeiro, 37, were killed in a single-car collision with a tree on North Cary Street at approximately 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, February 5.

In the accident, authorities and emergency responders discovered a Honda Civic that had slammed into a tree approximately five yards off the road, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz in a prepared statement.
