Carmel City Council Launches New Committee for Non-Profit Oversight, Mayor Finkam Champions Transparency Efforts

With strong support from Mayor Sue Finkam, the Carmel City Council approved a new committee Monday night that will examine the city’s relationships with its affiliated non-profit organizations, ushering in a new era of governmental accountability and clarity.

As stated in a government newsletter released shortly after the city council meeting, Mayor Finkam’s transparency and accountability campaign, which included closing the All Things Carmel store, addressing the costly ties with Promote Carmel, Inc., and launching a financial transparency portal that, in his own words, “provides residents with a clear and detailed look into the city’s financials,” formed the foundation for the introduction of the Affiliate Review Committee, which was unanimously approved by council members.

A clear mission is at the top of the committee’s agenda: compile reports on all non-profits with ties to the city, exploring their goals, governance, tax obligations, potential conflicts of interest, executive compensation packages, city cash infusions into these organizations, and a status check on assets and liabilities. This is a challenging task, but one that City Council President Tony Green and his colleagues are clearly prepared to undertake.

Following the council’s decision, Mayor Finkam said he was excited to work with this new body, saying, “I look forward to continuing the work already underway alongside the city council and this new committee.” Green, on the other hand, happily tipped his hat to the mayor’s endorsement of the committee, acknowledging the council’s unwavering commitment to the city and highlighting the resolution introduced by council member at-large Jeff Worrell as a bold step toward cementing fiscal efficiency and guardianship within municipal workings. He believes this ongoing effort will have a significant impact on how the city manages its finances.
