CDC Reports Spike in Norovirus Outbreaks This Winter, Affecting Multiple States

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of cases of norovirus gastrointestinal bugs is increasing in certain regions of the United States this winter.

Government data indicates that the number of norovirus cases in certain regions of the United States is increasing this winter. Norovirus is a highly contagious and disgusting stomach illness.

According to the most recent data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 91 norovirus outbreaks reported during the week of December 5, an increase from the 69 outbreaks reported during the final week of November.

A maximum of 65 outbreaks were reported during the first week of December, as indicated by data from the previous few years.

Sudden vomiting and diarrhea are the hallmarks of a norovirus infection. Outbreaks are frequently observed in congregate living environments, such as nursing homes and institutions, as well as in schools and other locations where individuals are in close proximity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that hundreds of cruise passengers contracted norovirus on three distinct vessels earlier this month. The CDC has documented outbreaks of the virus on 14 voyages this year. Compared to any other month in 2024, December has experienced the maximum number of cruise ship outbreaks in a single month.

Additionally, there is an increase in the number of cases on land. The Minnesota Department of Health recently recorded 40 norovirus cases, which is twice the average number for December.

Millions of individuals are affected by approximately 2,500 norovirus outbreaks that are reported annually in the United States. Although epidemics may occur at any time of year, they are most prevalent from November to April.

Norovirus is responsible for an average of 900 fatalities and 109,000 hospitalizations annually in the United States, with 19 million to 21 million illnesses annually, with the majority of these occurring in adults aged 65 and older. Additionally, it results in 465,000 emergency department visits, with the majority of these visits involving small children.
