John Crayton Jr., 42, of Central Texas, will serve the next 40 years in prison for the drunk driving incident that killed an Elgin married couple more than two years ago. According to KVUE, a Williamson County jury found Crayton guilty of intoxication manslaughter after a trial that ended on November 14.
Crayton was seen speeding in his Dodge Ram along FM 973 in Taylor on the evening of September 5, 2022, before veering into the other lane and crashing into a Toyota Camry. According to information from the FOX 7 Austin coverage of the tragedy, Christopher “Ali” Vassof, 38, and his wife, Leonora Soriano, 39, who were returning from a birthday celebration, were killed instantly in the tragic crash.
When emergency personnel arrived on the site, they found that Crayton had a blood alcohol percentage of 0.175, which was much higher than the permitted amount. Crayton’s prior criminal history, which includes arrests for aggravated robbery, violence, and public intoxication, further exacerbated this result and led to his conviction. He had previously served a total of ten years for his prior transgressions before this occurrence.
Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick said, “The senseless loss of life caused by Crayton’s reckless actions is a tragedy that could have been prevented,” and he expressed hope that the victims’ loved ones would receive some measure of justice from the sentence.
