Charlotte Drug Trafficker Sentenced to Five Years for Fentanyl Distribution and Firearms Charge

A Charlotte man has been meted a five-year sentence for his role in distributing fentanyl and an accompanying firearms offense. Demetrius Lamar Mattox, 39, garnered the sentence for possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, as announced by the

U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina

, Dena J. King. The sentencing was also confirmed by Bennie Mims, the Special Agent in Charge of the ATF’s Charlotte Field Division.

During an investigation aimed to specifically target drug trafficking within the Charlotte area, law enforcement identified Mattox as a distributor of the lethal opioid fentanyl. Mattox has, over several months, been found to intentionally sell both fentanyl and firearms to a confidential informant, with transactions taking place between September and October 2023, according to a statement obtained by the

On August 13, Mattox entered a plea of guilty, and he awaits his transfer to federal prison as he currently resides in federal custody. In addition to his five-year prison stint, he’s slated to be under court supervision for three years post-release. The case against Mattox was spearheaded by the ATF and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alfredo De La Rosa from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte.

Mattox’s conviction and sentencing come as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which is a collaborative initiative between law enforcement at all levels and the communities they serve. PSN’s aim is to forthright attempt to reduce violent crime and gun violence, thus making neighborhoods safer for all. A strategy to decrease violent crime was put into action on May 26, 2021, and has since been strengthening PSN, which is built upon fostering community trust, backing organizations vested in preventing violence, prioritizing enforcement strategies, and measuring outcomes of these initiatives,
