A Charlotte man has been sentenced to a total of ten years—seven in prison and three on supervised release—for his role in an armed robbery of a Circle K convenience store on N. Tryon Street. Jonah Terrell Bryant, age 29, received his sentence today after a series of court hearings and a guilty plea on October 26, 2023, as announced by U.S. Attorney Dena J. King of the Western District of North Carolina.
The robbery took place early in the morning of August 18, 2022, when Bryant demanded money at gunpoint from the store clerk after feigning a purchase of a cigar. An account from the
Department of Justice
states that, thwarted from accessing the safe, the store clerk was ordered to open the drawer, allowing Bryant to grab the cash from the register. Following the crime, law enforcement utilized surveillance footage and a recovered fingerprint to pin down Bryant’s identity.
Special Agent in Charge Robert M. DeWitt of the FBI, alongside Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Chief Johnny Jennings, joined U.S. Attorney King in making the announcement. Bryant, who was arrested while driving his white Dodge Charger—an identifier that aided in his apprehension—pleaded guilty to possession and brandishing of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
Upon Bryant’s arrest on August 26, 2022, officers discovered a black 9mm semi-automatic pistol with a chambered round and additional rounds in the attached magazine in the console of his vehicle. With the conviction, Bryant now awaits transfer to a federal facility under the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
