Charlotte-Mecklenburg Pledges Continued Action During Homelessness Awareness Month, Honors Lives Lost

This month, Charlotte-Mecklenburg is focusing on raising awareness about homelessness. The community is seeing new efforts to help people who don’t have a safe place to live as a sign of hope. A recent statement says that the Homeless Services Network of Charlotte-Mecklenburg has planned a vigil to honor the lives of homeless people who have died in the past year. Without this, their deaths might not be remembered.

As a big step forward in the fight against homelessness, especially among former service members, Mecklenburg County reports that the number of homeless veterans has dropped by almost half since 2018, and by a sharp 29% in just the last year. This is due to the dedication shown through partnerships like the Community Solutions’ Built for Zero initiative, which is explained in more detail in Mecklenburg County’s Building Bridges Blog.

A quote from Karen Pelletier, director of Mecklenburg County’s Housing Innovation and Stabilization Services division, shows the many ways the problem needs to be solved: “Homelessness in our community is a complicated issue that needs many tools to address.” But we are still working on a number of ways to keep people from getting into our system, help them while they are in it, and help them find homes.

Pelletier talked about how American Rescue Plan Act funds were used to turn a motel into apartments for older people who are chronically homeless. He also talked about how a street outreach team has been set up to connect homeless people with important resources and help them get into housing. Finally, he said, the county has taken a big step by creating a strategic plan called “A Home for All” to outline long-term solutions that will end homelessness in the community.
