Charlotte Woman Charged with DWI After Fatal Pedestrian Collision on Old Pineville Rd

After a pedestrian was killed by a car on Old Pineville Road in the Steele Creek Division, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit conducted a comprehensive investigation. Last Wednesday night, emergency personnel found a damaged white 2000 Lexus RX300 and 39-year-old James Hines lying on the road with serious injuries; Hines was later declared dead by MEDIC, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department official report.

Although Tamika Smyre, 45, the driver of the Lexus, was not hurt in the collision, which happened just after 8:00 p.m., it was concluded that Smyre was intoxicated following additional testing by the DWI Task Force Officers. Smyre was taken into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and is currently facing charges of Possession of Marijuana, Driving While Impaired, and Driving While License Revoked. It was observed that speed was not thought to have played a role in the collision.

According to the CMPD, Hines was wearing dark clothing and was in the lanes of traffic when he was struck, which raises concerns regarding pedestrian safety and visibility. The investigation is still underway. The CMPD has issued a public request for witnesses through Detective Pressley at 704-432-2169, Ext. 3, or through Crime Stoppers using the above contact information, although the incident’s complete circumstances are still pending further disclosure.
