Chatham Community Library to Screen “Acts of Reparation” Documentary, Explores Reparations and Friendship through Ancestral Histories

A fascinating and thought-provoking program is scheduled to take place at the Chatham Community Library this Saturday. A special screening of the movie “Acts of Reparation” will be held in collaboration with the Community Remembrance Coalition-Chattera. According to Chatham County, the documentary chronicles the journey of two friends—one Black and one White—as they explore their ancestry and what reparations mean to them.

The screening is open to everyone and will take place on November 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Holmes Family Meeting Room of the library, which is situated at 197 NC Hwy 87, Pittsboro, NC. According to Chatham County, those who are interested in attending this free event can learn more by calling (919) 545-8084 or visiting the library’s website.

Before the screening of “Acts of Reparation,” Macky Alston, one of the film’s creators, will lead a virtual conversation. Selena Lewis Davidson and Alston made the documentary, which deliberately documents the experiences of the two by using a first-person plural narrative. According to Chatham County, they visit the South and have frequently discussed discussions on how race and its past have affected their friendships, families, and broader ties to the community.

Davidson and Alston, who have different ancestries—one’s ancestors were enslavers, the other enslaved—frame “Acts of Reparation” from their points of view. Nevertheless, they aim to comprehend and chart a course for the future of relationship restoration, community development, and the country at large. Regardless of a difficult and complicated common past, the producers hope to spark conversations and the possibility of change by bringing these untold stories to light, as stated by Chatham County.
