Chicago Police Warn of Serial Burglar Targeting Safes and High-End Alcohol in Multiple Neighborhoods

Chicago police are alerting local businesses across various neighborhoods about a series of commercial burglaries targeting safes, cash registers, and high-end bottled alcohol. According to a

business alert

released by the Chicago Police Department, the incidents have occurred in Noble Square, East Village, River West, Fulton Market District, Fulton River District, Greektown, South Loop, River North, Lincoln Park, and West Town.

The crimes have been consistent in approach, involving a sole offender using a pry tool to gain entry. A series of burglaries, with the earliest reported on April 19 and the latest on November 9, suggests a pattern of predawn break-ins. The police have provided a list of the incident dates and specific locations, with multiple occurrences on Chicago Avenue, Milwaukee Avenue, and within the River North area. The repeated targeting of the River North community, while situated among an eclectic ensemble of businesses, conveys a brazen boldness in the perpetrator’s modus operandi.

The description of the suspect furnished by the police is of an African American male, aged 18 to 30, typically clad in a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark jacket, pants, and a dark-colored ski mask. This information was disseminated in hopes of garnering assistance from the community and business owners in apprehending the individual responsible for these serial offenses.

The Chicago Police Department’s alert encouraged businesses to enhance security measures by keeping properties well-lit and ensuring doors and windows are secure. The instructions came with advisories such as not to touch anything after a burglary and to call the police immediately. For those with video surveillance, the preservation and duplication of footage were highlighted—steps crucial in aiding investigating detectives.
