The East Lansing Police Department is leading an investigation after human remains were found in a freezer at a local townhome. According to
WILX
, the remains were discovered on Wintercrest Street, near Coolidge, after police responded to a 911 call about blood found on the floor of the residence. Officers, with assistance from the property management company, entered the home, confirmed the blood, and subsequently discovered the body of one deceased individual, along with possible remains of a second person in the freezer.
CBS News
reported that no arrests have been made as of yet, however, law enforcement believes there to be no immediate threat to the public. The evidence collected from the crime scene is being examined at a crime lab, as the Michigan State Police have joined the investigation efforts to support the local police force.
In a related report from
WLNS
, a neighbor, Andrew Whitney, expressed his shock; “We were thinking last night, how many days have we been sleeping in bed near feet away from a corpse?” Chief Pride of the East Lansing Police commented on the timeline, noting that the blood found had dried, indicating that the homicide likely took place some time ago. This gap between the occurrence of the crime and its discovery could add complexity to the investigation.
While official information has yet to identify a person of interest or a motive, the community remains on edge. Chief Pride, in a statement obtained by
WLNS
, emphasized that “My hopes is we find something quickly that way the public can be at ease, family can be at ease, neighbors can be at ease.” Authorities are urging anyone with information to reach out to the East Lansing Police Department at 517-351-4220, or directly to Detective Sgt. Nicole Mitchell at 517-319-6876 or Detective Jason Cotton at 517-319-6842. The management company overseeing Coolidge Place, where the discovery took place, has stated its full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
