Cleveland Braces for Cloudy Skies and Light Showers with Chances of Snow Later in the Week

Cleveland residents can expect low-impact weather conditions and a shortage of sunshine in the coming days, according to the

National Weather Service Cleveland, OH

. A trough of low pressure is moving out today, while high pressure is moving in and is expected to stay in control through Sunday. Despite this, there will be limited opportunities for sun due to persistent cloud cover and lake-enhanced moisture, which could result in light showers, particularly in areas northeast of Cleveland and northwest Pennsylvania.

With the current inversion holding below 850mb, the showers are likely to be mild, but enough moisture trapped beneath a subsidence inversion will keep the clouds overhead through Saturday. High temperatures today and on Saturday are predicted to hover in the low to mid-50s, slightly rising from the overnight lows in the 40s. These temperatures won’t vary significantly due to the cloud cover, trapped low-level moisture hindering a more significant drop during the night.

The forecast for the short term, from Saturday night through Monday night, signals somewhat more activity. A ridge of high pressure is appearing, which is unusually short-lived as it is set to be displaced by a warm front. This transition will bring southwest winds and a temperature bump into the upper 50s and low 60s before a weak cold front passes through Sunday night, bringing isolated showers “with 20-50% precipitation probabilities,” the

.

Tuesday through Thursday, the outlook becomes more dynamic as a more robust large-scale upper-level trough approaches, potentially deepening the surface low-pressure system over the northern Great Lakes to around 985-970mb by Thursday morning. This could result in widespread precipitation and gusty winds, with a significant likelihood of cooler temperatures impacting the region Wednesday through Thursday. It’s worth noting that ensemble model forecasts have begun suggesting a 20-40% chance of at least an inch of snow accumulation by Thursday, a substantial probability given the timeframe. While current forecasts mention rain, indications of a shift toward colder, more muscular conditions have raised the possibility of snow later in the week.

Aviation conditions are expected to remain less than ideal through the early hours of Saturday, the trough affecting visibility and creating a mix of Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and Marginal VFR (MVFR) conditions, especially for east-southeast areas of Lake Erie, including the Cleveland and Erie airports. Winds should shift to the west-northwest across the board with speeds up to 10 knots today.

Marine conditions will be a bit choppy due to north-to-northwest winds through Saturday morning, calming down as high pressure settles in. Come Sunday afternoon, winds will strengthen again to 15 to 20 knots after a shift to the southwest and increasing ahead of the cold front expected Sunday night. For boaters and coastal interests, this highlights a period of higher alert, the National Weather Service advises.
