A Colombian man died after falling from the border fence in a terrible occurrence that happened close to the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in San Diego, California. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the incident happened last Friday at approximately 5:42 a.m. and was recorded by a National Guardsman keeping an eye on a Border Patrol Remote Video Surveillance System.
The security film showed a group of suspected noncitizens trying to scale the border barriers just west of the port in an attempt to enter the United States. The party split up during the trip, with three members making it north and one returning to Mexico. The secondary barrier is around 30 feet high, and two men were seen trying to descend its north side. Then, according to CBP, one of the men collapsed to the ground.
The Colombian man was discovered conscious but in pain by the first Border Patrol officer to arrive in a marked car. The men later discovered an improvised ladder they had constructed to climb the barrier. After getting access to the north side of the barrier where the man had landed, the agent on the scene radioed for emergency medical assistance right away and waited for more help and emergency services to arrive.
The injured man was waiting, and just as the fire department and emergency medical services were going to arrive, he stopped responding. At 6:25 a.m., it was established that the person had passed away from his wounds. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, “at approximately 6:50 a.m., San Diego Police Department personnel arrived on scene” first, followed later in the morning by an investigator from the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
Last Saturday, an autopsy was performed, and CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility is still investigating the event. The unfortunate circumstances surrounding the man’s death have also been communicated to the Office of Inspector General at the Department of Homeland Security.
