Columbus Police Officers Not Indicted by Franklin County Grand Jury in Fatal Shooting of Colin Jennings

A Franklin County grand jury has made the decision not to indict Columbus police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Colin Jennings, 26, whom officers encountered during a call on Feb. 22, where Jennings was reportedly attempting to harm himself while also threatening his boyfriend, according to

Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office

.

Responding to the scene at a residence near 500 North Nelson Road, two Columbus Division of Police officers were confronted by Jennings who was holding a large knife — as the officers commanded Jennings to drop the weapon, he instead advanced towards them with the knife raised above his head, which led to one officer trying to use a taser on him while the other discharged three rounds from their service weapon subsequently hitting Jennings. The officers and medics attempted life-saving measures despite their attempts. Jennings was pronounced dead not long after the incident.

The grand jury’s role is to determine the existence of criminal conduct, specifically, in this scenario, whether there was any unlawful criminal homicide. In this instance, the grand jury found no basis for such charges.

Critical voices and local activists have raised questions about the officer’s use of lethal force, considering the mental distress Jennings appeared to be under. However, with the grand jury decision, these Columbus police officers will not face criminal charges for their actions on Feb. 22. This conclusion has found certain community sections at odds with the legal outcomes and the continuity of similar incidents preceding this one.
