Columbus, IN (DDN) – A routine traffic stop in Columbus turned into a major drug bust, leading to the arrest of both the driver and a passenger.
The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) conducted the stop on Tuesday afternoon, uncovering a significant amount of illegal drugs during a search of the vehicle.
The incident began around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday when BCSO deputies initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for a minor traffic violation in the 1500 block of U.S. 31 South. Deputies pulled over a white sedan after observing what they believed to be erratic driving behavior.
Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies noticed suspicious behavior from both the driver and the passenger. After a brief conversation, the deputies became concerned and requested permission to search the vehicle, a request that was granted by the driver.
During the search, deputies uncovered a significant amount of drugs hidden in various compartments of the vehicle. Authorities seized approximately 50 grams of methamphetamine, along with smaller amounts of heroin and marijuana.
In addition to the drugs, deputies found drug paraphernalia commonly associated with the distribution of controlled substances.
“This was an excellent example of proactive law enforcement work,” said Sheriff Matt Myers of the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office. “What began as a routine traffic stop turned into an important seizure of illegal drugs, and we are pleased that both individuals are now off the streets.”
The driver, 30-year-old Jason Cole of Columbus, and his passenger, 25-year-old Tiffany Harris of Seymour, were arrested and taken into custody on multiple drug-related charges.
Cole faces charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Harris has been charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Both suspects were transported to the Bartholomew County Jail, where they are currently being held without bond. Their initial court appearances are expected to take place later this week.
The drug bust is being hailed as a significant victory for local law enforcement. Methamphetamine and heroin use have been growing concerns in Columbus and surrounding areas, and authorities are working tirelessly to combat the ongoing drug crisis.
“We know that drugs like methamphetamine and heroin are a serious issue in our community,” Sheriff Myers said. “Our officers are committed to disrupting the flow of illegal substances and keeping our neighborhoods safe.”
BCSO has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. The sheriff’s office also encourages residents to continue working with local authorities to help address drug trafficking and related crimes.
As the legal process moves forward, both Cole and Harris will face a series of hearings in the coming weeks. The investigation is still ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as more information becomes available.
Authorities are also looking into potential connections to larger drug distribution networks in the region.

What started as a routine traffic stop turned into a significant drug bust, thanks to the keen observations and swift actions of the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office.
