Dennis Bailey and Cliff Sevier, two longtime Rockwall County Commissioners, have announced their retirement, which is scheduled for January 1, 2025. According to a Rockwall County press release, Lorne Liechty will replace Bailey in Precinct 3 and Bobby Gallana will fill the Precinct 1 seat that Sevier left vacant. Following a stellar career in the US Army and the Rockwall City Council, Sevier joined the Commissioners Court on January 1, 2013. Among his major achievements during his tenure, according to Sevier, were the building of the new county prison and Administration Building and his work on the Rockwall County Planning Consortium. Commissioner Dana Macalik emphasized Sevier’s mentoring and community effect, while his colleague, Commissioner John Stacy, praised Sevier’s professionalism.
Bailey began serving on the Commissioners Court on January 1, 2009, after serving as mayor and then lobbying for AT&T. Known as a key player in public safety, Bailey was instrumental in the development of the county’s interoperable radio network for emergency response. His name has been associated with the building of the county’s new courthouse and the creation of other courts in the county, as if that weren’t enough. According to Rockwall County, he was also the Vice Chairman of the largest public power pool in Texas, where he had a significant impact on local governments’ power purchase decisions. Peers praised both Commissioners, with Commissioner Macalik acknowledging Bailey’s commitment to community service and Commissioner Stacy once more praising his leadership.
When considering the legacy of both Commissioners, County Judge Frank New said, “Serving the public is often a hard but rewarding experience.” New praised Bailey and Sevier’s long-term dedication to public service and wished them health, happiness, and the opportunity to spend meaningful time with their families after retirement, according to Rockwall County’s announcement.
Following the Commissioners Court meeting on November 26, Rockwall County will hold a reception to recognize Sevier and Bailey’s efforts. Both Sevier and Bailey are ending important chapters in their lives with these changes, and their contributions will continue to influence Rockwall County for years to come.
