There is growing conjecture on Mayor London Breed’s choice for the District 2 Supervisor position left open by Catherine Stefani, who has been elected to the state Assembly, as her term comes to an end. Given his past outbursts at mayor-elect Daniel Lurie, Johnston’s possible appointment is causing anxiety over what may be seen as a polarizing move. He publicly made fun of Lurie during the campaign, for example, and was named the “biggest mayoral race troll” of 2018 by SF Weekly. The San Francisco Chronicle was able to receive statements from Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin, who described the possible appointment as “a vindictive parting shot by the mayor.”
According to observations made by City Hall insiders, Breed’s decision might not be in line with the goals of cooperation and solidarity. “District 2 residents deserve a supervisor who is committed to represent them and serve in their best interest and not in the interest of petty politics or political payback,” said Supervisor Connie Chan, who would work alongside Johnston if appointed. Johnston’s transfer may be possible regardless of his present District 8 residency status because the City Attorney’s Office has made it clear that an appointee simply needs to live in the district by the time they are re-sworn into office. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Stefani’s seat will become empty on December 2 and Breed’s decision is expected to be made public prior to Lurie’s inauguration on January 8.
