A Squirrel Hill bakery’s health check has turned into a public hygiene issue. A consumer notice has been issued for Five Points Artisan Bakery on Wilkins Avenue due to unsettling discoveries, such as a dead mouse and rodent droppings, according to CBS News Pittsburgh.
The Allegheny County Health Department discovered during an inspection on Tuesday that the alert continued until Thursday afternoon. An alarming number of mouse droppings were found by the inspector on a number of surfaces, including a slicer. According to CBS News Pittsburgh, a “severely decomposed mouse corpse” discovered beneath a cooler condenser amid the bakery’s supplies and equipment raised concerns about the facility’s hygienic standards.
Audacy described further food safety violations that were reported, which made the problem more worse. Contaminated utensils including residues of old food and recurring issues like dirty can openers and dough proofing bins were among the violations mentioned. Rodent droppings were discovered hidden beneath freezers, under a cooler, and between walls in the bakery’s hard-to-reach areas—a blatant disregard for fundamental hygiene standards.
Two infractions are classified as “high risk” by the Allegheny County Health Department due to their potential to result in foodborne illness or injury. The health department’s website will provide updates on the revocation of the consumer alert as soon as Five Points Artisan Bakery addresses the issues that were raised.
