Corpus Christi Police Investigate Fatal I-37 Crash That Left One Driver Dead, Cause Still Unknown

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (DDN) – According to the Corpus Christi Police Department, witnesses told them that Richard Darren French was driving in the right lane around NPID when he veered off the road and collided with a support beam on an overpass, killing himself.

The 54-year-old male was identified by the Nueces Medical Examiner on Tuesday, following the crash that closed I-37 and SH 358 at the eastbound interchange for many hours.

Officers said they were sent to the 5700 block of IH 37 eastbound shortly before 6:30 a.m. in response to the major single-vehicle incident.

French was declared deceased on the scene of the collision. He was the only person found in the vehicle.

It is currently unknown what caused the driver to leave the road.

9:21 A.M. The flyovers have reopened.

According to Corpus Christi police, the large crash on Tuesday morning involving a single vehicle was fatal.

Follow-up investigators are currently on the scene. Officers are investigating a large traffic accident near the I-37 southbound/SH 358 eastbound intersection.

The flyover connecting I-37 to 358 eastbound is closed.

Motorists are recommended to take a different route and anticipate delays.
