‘Couldn’t handle the crying’: Mom said she ‘threw’ 1-year-old because baby’s tantrum ‘set her off’

In Indiana, a 20-year-old pregnant woman is charged with almost murdering her 1-year-old daughter by throwing the infant because she was unable to cope with the baby’s cries, causing serious head and brain damage that necessitated immediate surgery.

Authorities said that Alexandria G. Ring was arrested on Tuesday and charged with one crime of abandonment of a dependent and one act of domestic violence against a family member under the age of 14.

The defendant’s first name is listed as Alexandrea in jail and law enforcement records, but Alexandria is spelled in court records.

Officers responded to a complaint of an unconscious child at a property in the 1500 block of S. Kentucky Avenue at around 5:25 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024, according to a news release from the Evansville, Indiana, Police Department. Approximately 165 miles southwest of Indianapolis is the residence.

First responders found the victim and took her to a nearby hospital after arriving on the scene. The woman had serious head injuries, according to medical staff who evaluated her, including cerebral swelling and bleeding that necessitated emergency surgery to alleviate pressure on her brain. The infant allegedly had noticeable bruises on her arms, stomach, buttocks, and forehead, as well as behind both of her ears, according to the staff.

Ring allegedly acknowledged causing her daughter’s near-fatal injuries in a follow-up interview with detectives at police headquarters.

According to the press statement, Ring said that her daughter had soiled her clothes around 2:00 pm that day because of a poorly fitting diaper. After changing the child’s diaper, Ring reported that her daughter started crying. Ring apparently claimed that the crying was too much for her to bear and that it irritated her.

Police noted in the announcement that Ring also detailed an instance in which she put the infant into a Pack n Play after holding her over it. Later, Ring, who is 30 weeks pregnant, changed her story, saying that she dropped the child by accident because of her big belly, which made it difficult for her to properly place the victim in the Pack n Play. She said that after she had lifted the victim, she had set her on the floor, where she claimed the victim’s forehead was bruised when the kid fell face-first into a cabinet and struck her head on a metal object.

Police claimed that Ring’s failure to promptly seek medical attention for her kid following the 2 p.m. event severely worsened her daughter’s condition.

Ring did not call 9-1-1 until around 5:23 p.m., when her boyfriend got home from work, even though the youngster was exhibiting signs of lethargy and intermittently losing consciousness, according to the statement claims. Ring expressed concern about the victim’s condition to her partner earlier, but she put off getting medical attention until later.

Ring is presently being detained at the Vanderburgh County Jail on a $15,000 cash-only bond. Additionally, she has been told not to speak to her daughter at all.

Ring’s initial hearing was set by a judge for Monday, November 25, 2024, in the afternoon.
