Craig Angelos is slated to leave the University of Hawaii, which is about to announce changes to its sports leadership. Angelos, who has been the university’s athletics director since June 2023, will be fired on December 1, as Hawaii News Now first reported. Angelos has only been in the role for 18 months, even though he helped lead the majority of UH teams into the Mountain West Conference.According to KHON2 Sportssources, Angelos was not bound by a contract; as an at-will employee, he may be fired at any time. Angelos has not reacted to demands for comment, the institution has remained silent on the matter, and the details of the departure are still unknown.
According to Spectrum News, there will be a department-wide meeting this afternoon to discuss the impending leadership change in the UH athletic department. The meeting comes soon after a turbulent weekend for UH athletics, in which the football team lost to Utah State 55-10.
The meeting was announced via email yesterday to the athletic department workers. A prearranged meeting of the head coaches is also anticipated to occur this morning. “What’s interesting is he’s making this termination, Lassner, within weeks of his retirement,” Jeff Portnoy, a former member of the UH Board of Regents, told Spectrum News, expressing his curiosity about the timing.
Originally from Salt Lake City and a baseball player at BYU, Angelos brought a diverse administrative expertise to UH, including procuring a 30,000-seat stadium at Florida Atlantic University and serving as senior deputy AD at Long Island University. He took a different strategy than his predecessors, and during his brief tenure as head, he brought on a number of new employees and looked into ways to boost department revenue.
