Crash in Kalkaska County Leaves Officer and Two Others Injured, Speed a Factor

KALKASKA COUNTY, MI (DDN) – During a crash in Kalkaska County, a police officer was nearly crushed between his vehicle and a semi-truck.

near 8:35 a.m. on Wednesday, the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office reported a crash near the intersection of U.S. 131, M-72, and County Road 612 in Kalkaska.

An officer had stopped to assist a semi-truck experiencing mechanical troubles when the driver of a Nissan SUV, a 37-year-old female from Kalkaska, collided with the parked police vehicle.

The impact pushed it into the semi-truck. The police officer, who was between the semi-truck and the patrol car, was hit by his patrol vehicle and thrown into the junction. The semi-truck passenger was knocked down after being struck by collision debris.

All three people were transported to Kalkaska Memorial Health Center with injuries. They were treated and then freed. Deputies say speed was a role in the crash.

“The Kalkaska Sheriff’s Office would like to remind all drivers to slow down on icy roads, especially when you see emergency vehicles with flashing lights,” according to an announcement.

Kalkaska EMS and the Kalkaska Township Fire Department assisted on the site.
