The crash was cleared shortly before 8:30 a.m., when the passenger car and tractor-trailer were on opposite sides of the highway. Troopers are still on the scene, continuing their investigation.
NCDOT images show Wake County crews on the scene, with some of the four-lane highway closed. While only one lane remained open for traffic, the other three were used to assist the vehicles involved, resulting in long periods of heavy congestion.
According to troopers, the passenger vehicle was smashed from behind, trapping one person in the front. Another person became unconscious and was transported to a nearby hospital.
A tractor-trailer was also involved in the crash, though troopers are unsure of the extent of their involvement at this time. Troopers said the motorist was treated on the spot.
