D.C. Man Pleads Guilty to Sexual Abuse of Elderly Woman, Faces 20-Year Prison Sentence

In a stark reminder of the vulnerability that society’s elders face, Darnell Peoples, a 22-year-old man from Washington, D.C., has entered a guilty plea for the sexual abuse of a senior citizen in her own yard. This incident occurred earlier this year in Southeast Washington. According to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the MPD, detailed in a press release by theUnited States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, Peoples faces a lengthy prison term.

Peoples admitted to first-degree sexual abuse in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia where the plea agreement suggests an incarceration period of twenty years followed by supervised release and compulsory lifetime registration as a sex offender, all pending approval from the Court. Judge Anthony C. Epstein has set the sentencing for February 10, 2025. On the afternoon of June 11, Peoples approached the victim as she was attending to her garden, he brandished a knife and orchestrated a scenario of sexual violence that was both abhorrent and deeply traumatizing.

The assault was both bold and brutal, a fact outlined in the “proffer of facts” at the plea hearing, where it was exposed that Peoples disregarded the victim’s physical limitations, forcibly throwing her to the ground and demanding sexual acts at knifepoint, the repeated forced insertion compounded the ghastly nature of the violation whilst the victim was in distress, pleading against the attack. Following a swift response, Peoples was apprehended the same day of the incident, remaining in custody since his arrest. His convicting was partly the result of the fast-acting efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristin Sourbeer is leading the prosecution of the case, which highlights the continued issue of sexual crimes against vulnerable populations, prompting a community and law enforcement collaboration to respond to and prevent such egregious offenses. It’s a collective endeavor that underlines the necessity for both vigilance and a robust justice system to safeguard those most susceptible to predation, and doing so with due diligence and prosecutorial resolve.
