DALLAS – The much-anticipated drone show at the Dallas New Year’s Eve bash has been canceled after a recent mishap involving the same drone company during a holiday event in Florida.
Sky Elements Drones, a North Texas-based company, informed Reunion Tower it would not participate in this year’s event. The decision comes after some of the company’s drones collided and fell from the sky at a holiday show in Orlando, Florida, last week.
Dusti Groskreutz, president of Reunion Tower, shared the update in a statement:
“Out of an abundance of caution following a recent incident, Sky Elements Drones is carefully reviewing their processes for future shows and will not be participating this year. Despite this, viewers can still look forward to a dazzling celebration with our 259 LED light show and iconic fireworks display lighting up the night sky.”
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the Florida incident, where drones crashed into a crowd during a Sky Elements show at Lake Eola Park on December 21.
One of the falling drones struck a 7-year-old boy, causing minor injuries. The boy’s mother spoke out earlier this week, expressing her concern over the incident.
Sky Elements Drones, based in Coppell, issued a statement expressing their regret:
“We sincerely hope for a full and speedy recovery for those affected. The well-being of our audience is our utmost priority. We are working closely with the FAA and City of Orlando officials to determine what happened and ensure future safety.”
The company emphasized its commitment to safety, noting that millions of people enjoy their shows every year.
Although the drones won’t take to the skies, Dallas residents and visitors can still enjoy the LED light display and spectacular fireworks to ring in the New Year.
