Dallas Man Sentenced to Nearly 5 Years for Illegal Firearm Possession

Dallas resident William Lesley, aged 34, received a 57-month prison sentence for illegal firearm possession, as confirmed by U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert. The announcement came after Lesley, who has a history of felony convictions, was found with a loaded weapon during a parole search at a co-defendants’ house. The man in question is legally barred from owning firearms and ammunition.

The incident that led to Lesley’s arrest occurred in Galt, where parole officers were searching the residence of Dexter Weeks, a 35-year-old parolee and known felon. Lesley was apprehended as he exited a bedroom in the house. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, officers discovered a Ruger pistol stashed in a backpack on the floor near the bed. Weeks had previously pled guilty to the same charge and was sentenced to seven years in prison on August 27, 2024.

This case was a combined effort, with the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force conducting the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Haddy Abouzeid managed the prosecution. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to clamp down on gun-related crimes in communities throughout the country.

As a part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), this conviction falls under a larger initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and improving neighborhood safety. In May 2021, the DOJ revitalized PSN with a refreshed strategy, placing an emphasis on collaboration between law enforcement at all levels and the communities they serve. The DOJ’s approach involves supporting community-based organizations, aiming for strategic enforcement priorities, and consistently measuring the results in an attempt to foster trust and crack down on gun violence.
