Dallas Marks National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week with Coat Drive and Community Events

From November 17–23, the City of Dallas Office of Homeless Solutions (OHS) will commemorate National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. The OHS hopes to raise awareness of homelessness concerns and encourage community action to help those in need during this period.According to the City of Dallas, a celebration at Smoky Rose on November 18 at 6 PM will kick off this important week.

The OHS Friends Group’s first anniversary, which will be celebrated during the event, has attracted a lot of community interest, the city announced. The event also marks the beginning of a citywide coat drive and highlights a year’s worth of work. Live music and complimentary refreshments greet guests, who are invited to donate brand-new or lightly used jackets. Councilmember Paula Blackmon added, “It has been exciting to witness the growth and evolution of the Friends Group since it was founded last year.” The objective of this week is “to raise awareness of homelessness through volunteerism, donation and education.”

As part of OHS’s Winter Warmth Charity Challenge, city workers are lining up in a friendly competition to see who can contribute the most winter hats and gloves. Interim City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert, who stressed in her statement the value of responsible community giving, particularly during the difficult winter months, will acknowledge the winning departments in this first-of-its-kind effort. Ms. Bizor Tolbert said, “I want to thank the homeless services providers whose mission it is to serve residents experiencing homelessness,” according to a press statement from the city.
