After being detained for unlawfully disclosing body camera footage, a Dallas police officer found himself in hot water. After a warrant was obtained for “Unauthorized Release of Body Worn Camera Recording,” a misdemeanor charge, Officer Ali Toppa, #12098, turned himself in to the Irving Police Department yesterday.
Toppa is presently on administrative leave after joining the Northwest Patrol Division of the Dallas Police Department in September 2020. This is pending the conclusion of an internal inquiry into the situation, in accordance with the department’s regular practice. Officer Toppa decided to turn himself in just one day before his arrest was discovered, according to a brief statement issued by the Dallas Police Department.
Investigating any policy violations related to the inappropriate distribution of potentially sensitive video captured during police operations is the responsibility of the internal affairs section. The Dallas Police Department has not, however, provided information about the type of footage Toppa published or the circumstances behind its release.
