While police continue to seek for the attacker, a Danish tourist suffered serious facial injuries following an allegedly unprovoked slashing on the Upper West Side. ABC7 New York reports that the event happened yesterday morning close to the junction of Columbus Avenue and West 86th Street.
According to police accounts, the 55-year-old victim, whose identity has not been made public, was attacked while out for a stroll with a partner. The attacker then fled on West 86th Street, shouting “f- you guys” after the assault. According to surveillance footage released by NBC New York, a man wearing shorts and a gray T-shirt is seen beating the tourist from behind while brandishing what looks to be a knife before escaping the area.
The man needed medical attention at Mount Sinai Hospital after the incident caused significant cuts to his face, ear, and neck. It is anticipated that he will recover from his injuries. Liz Stroscio, a neighbor, told ABC7 New York, “I mean, it looks like just an average person on the way to the gym or something, he wouldn’t even look twice at this person.” The violence’s seeming randomness has alarmed the locals.
While waiting for rescue personnel, the injured man received assistance from good samaritans in the area. One eyewitness told NBC New York, “He was sitting up in the doorway.” One of his pals took off his shirt and held it to his head. The police are searching the neighborhood for more evidence, and the perpetrator is still at large. The event occurred the same week when three people were fatally stabbed in separate unprovoked attacks in Manhattan. In some cases, a man is accused with three murders.
It is advised that anyone with knowledge on the slashing get in touch with the police. As they deal with these upsetting incidents of violence against innocent people, law enforcement and the community at large continue to have serious concerns about the violence on New York’s streets.
