Dartmouth College Sorority Charged After Incident Leading to Student’s Drowning in Hanover

Following a terrible event this summer in which a student drowned, a Dartmouth College sorority and two of its fraternity members are being charged. According to CBS News, the student, identified as Won Jang, 20, of Middletown, Delaware, vanished in July following an off-campus party hosted by the Alpha Phi sorority. Jang’s body was later found in the Connecticut River by state and local emergency personnel.

Alpha Phi was accused with one count of aiding an underage alcohol home by Hanover, New Hampshire police last Friday. Two members of the fraternity Beta Alpha Omega, which Jang belonged to, are also charged with giving alcohol to underage individuals. The majority of partygoers were under 21, and after the event, some of them decided to swim in the river, according to WCVB. However, the crowd scattered when an unexpected downpour struck, leaving Jang behind—who, according to family members, was incapable of swimming.

Following the incident, Dartmouth College suspended both the Alpha Phi sorority and the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity, and the suspensions remain in effect.
