According to the City of Davis, the Davis City Council has implemented a multi-tiered approach to update homeless services in an attempt to address homelessness-related issues. Measures to protect both public and private properties, including an Encampment Response Protocol and revisions to the municipal law, were voted on during a special meeting.
The City of Davis announced last night that the Council had proposed changes to the camping code. With the addition of forbidden zones that now include private land in addition to parks and open spaces, as required under the previous language, this is an effort to better manage where camping is permitted.
Before the ordinance’s enforcement occurs, the City’s outreach team, supported by the Department of Social resources and Housing, will provide resources to the homeless utilizing a compassion-first strategy. In order to connect people with the resources they need while balancing the requirements of the larger community, this coordinated response combines the work of multiple agencies.
The City has suggested two methods for reporting encampment-related concerns. Reporting non-urgent issues can be done online or using the My Davis app. For urgent issues that need help right away, such aggressive behavior, call 911 or the non-emergency number of the Police Department. This dual channel guarantees prompt and effective assistance to encampments and/or unsheltered individuals in need.
City Council has also instructed staff to consider ways to expand assistance for homeless people in response to community needs. This includes talking about authorized camping sites and extended Respite Center hours. A Downtown Streets Team Peer Support Program and neighborhood navigators to actively disseminate information on homelessness prevention are just two examples of the many community-focused initiatives that the Council indicated interest in.
In order to strengthen the network of assistance for Davis’ homeless population, the City Council is also looking to cooperate with the area’s religious community. The City’s website for the Police Department and Social Services and Housing has further information about the effort and the City Council Meeting, including a video recording of the special meeting.
