Davis Community Honors Karim Abou Najm with “Fiat Lux” Art Installation Unveiling at Sycamore Park

To honor Karim Abou Najm, the City of Davis and the neighborhood gathered yesterday to commemorate the opening of a poignant new art work called “Fiat Lux.” According to the City of Davis’ official statement, the event was originally scheduled to take place at Sycamore Park but was quickly moved to the Willett Elementary Multi-purpose Room because of an uncooperative weather forecast.

“Fiat Lux” was made possible by donations from a variety of sources, showcasing the strength of group giving. However, the late Karim Abou Najm’s family and friends were the driving force behind the project. Additional funding was provided by the City of Davis Municipal Arts Fund and the University of California, Davis to further illuminate the piece literally. This show of solidarity in commemorating Najm’s memory is evidence of the influence he had on others in his immediate vicinity.

At exactly 4 p.m., attendees and members of the community who had survived the gloom were led inside the multipurpose room’s warmth before making their way to the park where the artwork now serves as a new beacon. According to the City of Davis website, “Fiat Lux,” which translates from Latin to “let there be light,” means more than just illumination.
