Davis scores 25 to lift Detroit Mercy past Youngstown State


Youngstown, Ohio – Antoine Davis had 25 points when Detroit narrowly defeated Mercy Youngstown State 78-75 on Friday.

Matt Johnson added 14 points for Detroit Mercy (5-8, 4-5 Horizon League). Dwayne Rose Jr. scored 12 points and Noah Waterman had 10.

Johnson made two free throws for a three-point lead by 10 seconds and Shemar Rathan-Mayes was on the other end with a 3-pointer.

Garrett Covington achieved a season high with 24 points for the Penguins (8-9, 4-9). Michael Akuchie added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Rathan-Mayes had 13 points and seven assists.

Oakland 81, (at) Purdue Fort Wayne 66: Jalen Moore had 18 points to top five Oakland players in double digits when the Golden Grizzlies defeated Purdue Fort Wayne. Zion Young added 15 points for the Golden Grizzlies. Trey Townsend was 11, Micah Parrish 11 and Daniel Oladapo 11. Townsend also had 12 rebounds. Bobby Planutis had 16 points for the Mastodons (6-8, 5-8 Horizon League).

Big Ten

► (At) No. 19 Illinois 80, Iowa 75: Ayo Dosunmu scored 25 points, Trent Frazier had 24 and No. 19 Illinois upset No. 7 Iowa.

In one of the most fun games of the Big Ten season, the teams exchanged leads for most of the game. Illinois eventually took command in the final two minutes but was only three points higher when Iowa’s Jordan Bohannon missed a hasty 3-pointer 11 seconds from time.

The Illinois Kofi Cockburn was immediately fouled and missed his free throw, but caught the rebound. Cockburn was fouled again 2 seconds ahead and sunk both shots to seal the victory.

Luka Garza and Joe Wieskamp each had 19 points for Iowa (12-4, 6-3 Big Ten). Garza was challenged for his third foul early in the second half and spent more than seven minutes on the bench. He was marked for his fourth with 4 minutes left and the result was tied at 69.

Jacob Grandison had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Illinois (11-5, 7-3). Cockburn added nine points and 11 rebounds.

State women

► (At) Cleveland State 75, Oakland 70: Mariah White scored 24 and Destiny Leo scored 23 to lead Cleveland State (4-7, 4-7 Horizon). Alona Blackwell had 24 points, Kahaijah Dean 13 and Breanna Perry 12 for Oakland (8-8, 8-5).
