DC Man Sentenced to 13 Years for Unprovoked Assault on Psychiatrist at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital

A 44-year-old DC man has been handed a 13-year prison sentence for an unprovoked assault on a senior citizen psychiatrist at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, as per the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. On Thursday, Anthony Braxton received his sentence following a conviction by a jury for aggravated assault; U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and MPD Chief Pamela A. Smith announced this.

The attack occurred back on April 23, 2020, when the unnamed victim doctor was making his way to assist a colleague and patient, Braxton struck him from behind with a punch to the head that sent him to the ground unconscious and then over the next several weeks his condition worsened, he developed a life-threatening brain bleed that necessitated two surgeries and has resulted in ongoing health issues for the victim,

In addition to the prison term, Honorable Judge Andrea Hertzfeld mandated three years of supervised release for Braxton after his incarceration period concluded. The trial jury found Braxton guilty on September 5, capping the legal conclusion to an incident that had repercussions for both the victim and the accused over multiple years.

The successful prosecution of the case was the result of a collaborative effort involving multiple members from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Metropolitan Police Department. Notable commendations were given to the handling attorneys, paralegals, and IT specialists who contributed.
