For a string of armed robberies and carjackings, 22-year-old Deangelo Richardson of Washington, DC, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Richardson’s sentences are related to his involvement in a violent outburst that occurred in July and November of 2022.
Richardson pled guilty in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on August 2, 2024. The verdict, issued by Judge Erik Christian, entails a five-year period of supervised release after his incarceration. This ruling resulted from a series of episodes, beginning with an armed carjacking on the 600 block of Morton Place NE, in which Richardson and his associates took the victim’s car and other possessions by force and used her credit cards at other locations.
The investigation, which was headed by the Carjacking Task Force Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department, resulted in the successful prosecution of former Assistant United States Attorney Omeed Assefi and Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Evans, according to MPD Chief Pamela A. Smith and U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves. The evidence demonstrated Richardson’s violent tendencies, since he and two other unnamed individuals covered their faces while committing each crime and threatened their victims with guns.
Not content to stop there, Richardson also committed an armed robbery on November 26, 2022. In this further instance, he preyed on a couple who were out walking their dog, seized a phone from them at gunpoint, and was caught that same night following a car chase. A significant sentence intended to provide some justice for the victims of these heinous acts is the outcome of the diligent work of law enforcement.
