De’Aaron Fox Expressed Shock at Kings’ New Mascot During NBA Team Event in Sacramento

The Sacramento Kings’ attempt to honor their past with the unveiling of their new mascot, “Roy Al,” didn’t go as planned. The mascot and new blue-and-red City Edition jerseys were meant to pay tribute to the team’s 15 years as the Cincinnati Royals. However, star player De’Aaron Fox’s first impression of Roy Al was less than favorable. Upon seeing the mascot, he said, “What the f–k is that?” His remark led to laughter from the reporters at the scene, according toSports Illustrated.

Before the Kings’ first NBA Cup game, Fox saw an image of Roy Al on a phone and, in confusion and dismay, remarked that the mascot “looks like he’d work a fast food restaurant.”Bleacher Reportcaptured the interaction on video, adding to the public reaction. Despite the surprise, Roy Al’s design is based on the old Cincinnati Royals logo, which featured a basketball head with a crown, explaining the mascot’s unique look.

The Kings’ longtime mascot, Slamson the Lion, will be joined by Roy Al for select games to boost team spirit and entertain fans. Both the new uniforms and the mascot debuted at the home game against the Utah Jazz. The team plans to showcase the City Edition jerseys in five home games and four road games, with some games featuring both teams in the special uniforms.

Roy Al will primarily appear at Golden 1 Center during games when the Kings wear their City Edition uniforms, engaging with fans and adding some fun to the atmosphere. This introduction is part of an effort to strengthen the team’s connection to its history. The key Saturday game at Golden 1 Center is scheduled to tip off at 10 p.m. ET.
