Deadline Detroit | Lengel: Detroit News Editorial Writer Ingrid Jacques Knows So Much More Than Dr. Fauci
The Republican obsession with taking away the emergency Covid powers from Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer is repeated again – this time in a Detroit News column by Assistant Opinion Editor Ingrid Jacques:
Here’s a question all Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer should ask: When will the emergency “end”? And when will the statewide restrictions that have been holding the state back for more than a year go away?
The answer to that redundant question is if the number of Covid cases in the state stops increasing. As of Thursday, the state recorded 6,036 new cases and 49 deaths. Sorry, but that’s a lot.
Jacques’ tired old Chamber of Commerce column comes a day after Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared on WXYZ with anchor Dave LewAllen asking about Michigan:
“Did we open too quickly?”
“You know that it is very likely,” said Fauci. “I hesitate to criticize everything the governor has done because she really is a pretty good governor. But I think the idea of pulling out early under pressure is understandable, why you might want it, but the results that I think manifest in what you do I see in Michigan. “
He is far more concerned about the dangers of easing restrictions on bars and restaurants than he is about schools, and these variations could very well account for much of the increase. He said it was a race between vaccinating people and spreading the variants.
So far the variants seem to be winning, but hopefully that will change. Implementing a policy that is based on partisan rather than science is just not wise.
Nevertheless, Jacques Freitag writes:
The governor has refused to find a clear path to facilitate her unprecedented unilateral control over millions of lives, despite vaccines becoming readily available.
At some point – and it should be soon – Whitmer has to stop acting like the grandmother, tell Michiganians where to go and how many others can go with them, and demand that they all wear masks.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has refused to find a clear way to end her unprecedented and unilateral control over millions of lives.
Not to mention that Jacques ignores the fact that Whitmer has lifted or relaxed many restrictions. In February, for example, it lifted restrictions on school contact sports. In March, it increased the capacity of restaurants and bars from 25 to 50 percent.
While Jacques advocates the same old mantra, others wonder why the governor didn’t step in and reintroduce some restrictions.
This is about life and health, not good old politics.
