Deadly E. Coli Outbreak Linked to California Carrots Leaves One Dead and Many Hospitalized Across Multiple States

A serious health alert has been issued across multiple states as a deadly E. coli outbreak has been linked to organic carrots from California-based Grimmway Farms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urge consumers to discard or return any bagged organic whole and baby carrots purchased, with a recall now in place after one fatality and numerous hospitalizations.

According toAction News Jax, even though the affected products are no longer believed to be for sale, they may still be in homes. Health officials have linked nearly 38 E. coli infections to the carrots, and sadly, at least one person has died due to the outbreak. The CDC has not specified where the death occurred, but two cases have been confirmed in New Jersey, as perNJ 101.5.

Consumers are advised to look out for multiple brands and sizes of bagged organic carrots, including those retailed by popular chains such as Trader Joe’s, Target, and Wegmans. Grimmway Farms, recognized as the world’s leading carrot producer, issued the recall on Nov. 16th, amidst rising concerns about the potential for serious illness. “Anyone with recalled carrots in their home should throw them out or return them to the store,” the CDC stated in a warning about potential ongoing risks.

As reported byCBS News, the investigation spans 18 states, with at least 15 individuals having been hospitalized. Signs of E. coli infection include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting. Those who show these symptoms after consuming the recalled carrots should seek immediate medical attention. The CDC emphasizes that the consuming of the recalled product poses a significant health threat.
