SAN FRANCISCO (DDN) – The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) reported that several people were injured in a multi-vehicle incident Sunday evening in the SoMa neighborhood. Around 6:08 p.m., San Francisco police responded to an accident on 6th Street between Bryant and Harrison.
According to the San Francisco Fire Department, there were eight victims. One of them died, while two others were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The fire department also reported that a dog perished at the scene.
The incident involved seven automobiles. The two victims, who suffered life-threatening injuries, are currently being treated at SF General Hospital.
One of the seven vehicles involved in the incident was a Waymo, an automated taxi, according to video captured by the Citizen App. The autonomous vehicle company revealed that one of its cars was involved in the crash, claiming that the Waymo was rear-ended.
According to a Waymo spokeswoman, the autonomous vehicle was struck from behind by a speeding car traveling at around 98 mph. The unoccupied Waymo came to a stop at a red light.
According to the representative, the speeding vehicle that hit the Waymo set off a chain reaction that resulted in a multiple-car collision.
An unoccupied Waymo vehicle was operating autonomously in San Francisco when it was struck from behind in a multiple-car collision caused by a vehicle traveling well above the speed limit. The trust and safety of our community remain our top priority, and we are coordinating with local safety officials.
The San Francisco Police Department says a probable suspect driver has been captured and is being treated at a hospital. Before the crash, there were several hit-and-run incidents on northbound I-280. Investigators are attempting to discover whether this is related to the Harrison Street crash.
According to SFFD, the public should avoid the area since roads around 6th Street and Harrison will be closed. The Chevron on Harrison Street remains operating.
The closures are likely to last overnight. The California Highway Patrol is also on the site, investigating the crash.
